How We Celebrate Christmas in Spain and Latin America:
¡Hola! It’s Romina Romaniello here today. It’s time for Hola Tuesday, your weekly Spanish lesson!! Today we have another xmas special: Especial de Navidad!
¡Estoy muy feliz! I’m very happy! My mum is finally here and we’ve had such an amazing time together so far. Brenda and I picked her up last Wednesday from the airport and haven’t stopped chatting and drinking mate all week (mate is a traditional Argentinean tea we drink with a cup and a straw – see photo below).
We’ve taken her to the beach, the city, the mall and also the pool. It’s very hot at the moment as we wait to celebrate Christmas. We’ll have a very traditional Spanish Christmas next week with the familia which bring us to today’s lesson.
Today we’ll talk about how we celebrate Christmas in Latin America and Spain which is very different to many other countries.

La Navidad en Latino América y España:
La Navidad se festeja el 24 de diciembre que es la noche buena o a víspera de la Navidad. Durante el día del 24 de diciembre, preparamos los alimentos, las comidas típicas de la Navidad son las ensaladas y platos típicos de cada país, por ejemplo, en Argentina comemos carne asada. De postre es común comer ensalada de frutas, helado, pan dulce y turrón con sidra. El turrón, el pan dulce y la sidra son típicos de la época navideña. Las familias católicas vas a misa antes de cenar. La cena de Navidad comienza alrededor de las ocho de la noche con toda la familia y es una ocasión muy especial para la que nos arreglamos y vestimos para impresionar a nuestros familiares. Cenamos entre las nueve y media y las diez y media, luego escuchamos la radio y bailamos al compás de la música. Antes de la medianoche se hace el conteo y a las doce festejamos la llegada de la Navidad con abrazos y brindis. Por lo general salimos afuera a saludar a los vecinos y a ver los fuegos artificiales. Luego, volvemos a la casa para abrir los regalos que milagrosamente aparecieron debajo del árbol de Navidad. A la una de la mañana, los ancianos y los niños se van a dormir y los jóvenes sales de fiesta con sus amigos. El 25 es un día para relajarse y comer las sobras de la noche buena. Muchas familias se reúnen para festejar la Navidad con otros parientes que no han visto todavía.
